What does pre-employment background screening refer to?

A criminal history check, which is mandatory for all eligible positions as well as education or credential/licensing verifications when applicable.

Why should we conduct a background check on individuals?

Background checks help identify an individual and establish if there are any concerns regarding criminal behaviour or any other issues which may negatively impact an organization and their assets.

When are background checks required?

Background checks are required during engagement of new staff or existing staff moving into a critical or sensitive position during a transfer, promotion or reclassification of an existing position.

What does the security clearance process involve?

The process involves a range of background checks and investigations in efforts to identify specific vulnerabilities that may be used against you in the form of manipulation, blackmail or coercion.

Security clearance assessments are conducted in accordance with the standards and guidelines contained in the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) personnel security core policy and the Australian Government Personnel Security Protocol (PERSEC).

How will the information I provide be protected?

All the information collected will be protected at the highest level of confidentiality and in accordance with the following legislations:

  • Privacy Act 1988
  • Archives ACT 1983
  • Freedom of Information ACT 1982
  • Crimes ACT 1914
  • Criminal Code ACT 1995 and
  • Public Service Act 1999.

Who will assess my suitability to hold a security clearance?

National Vetting Services is an Australian Government approved vetting company. All our staff are highly experienced analysts who possess appropriate qualifications and hold high level clearances.
